The last 48hours has seen heated conversations across multiple social media platforms, with many young Nigerians calling for the automatic scraping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad – SARS of the Nigeria police Force. #Endsars Agitation.
For instance, on twitter, the hashtags, #Endsars and #WaronSars trended for hours with prominent twitter and social media users joining forces with other Nigerians to call for either the immediate reform or automatic axing of Sars.
The call for the automatic shutdown of Sars found its way into major social media discuss after a report emanating from Ugheli, Delta State, suggested that some Police Officers belonging to the Police squad, allegedly killed a young man and made away with his Lexus 330 SUV, leaving his lifeless body by the road side.
Although Minister of State for Labour and employment, Festus Keyamo had since spoken to relatives of the young man who confirmed that he was not dead, but badly injured and responding to treatment in the hospital, but his supposed death and the incessant reports of exploitations by officers of Sars sparked heavy social media agitations.
Joining in the agitation for #Endsars were entertainment giants, Ayo Balogun – Wizkid and David Adeleke – Davido.
Wizkid and Davido’s entry into the social media discuss gave it prominence and finally got the attention of the governor of Lagos State who tweeted a response few hours ago.
He wrote: “The safety of our residents is my number one duty as the CSO of Lagos. So, reading reports of seemingly unlawful exploitation by the people charged to protect is very worrying & needs to be addressed immediately. Be assured that appropriate actions will be taken, & speedily too”.
Sanwo-Olu’s tweet was in response to Wizkid’s earlier tweet, where he wrote: “Mr. Governor! I met with you December 2019! You expressed how proud you are of the entertainment industry and all we do. Pls do something let’s be proud of you too abeg! #Endsars!!”.
Davido also joined and wrote: “#endsarsnow!!!If we all come together as brothers and sisters and also as citizens of this country we can end this nonsense!!”.
Many are still waiting to see if the new agitation for axing of Sars will eventually get the attention of appropriate authorities before things get out of hand.
