HURIWA, South-east groups lament collapse of security architecture

• Say attack meant to paint Igbo in bad light

Condemning the violent assassination attempt on the person of the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial zone at the National Assembly, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, civil rights body, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has blamed security strategy in the South-east for the success of the dastardly act
National coordinator of the rights group, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, yesterday, said no reason could be ruled out, including assassination, which investigators should thoroughly investigate to unravel the remote and immediate circumstances surrounding the dastardly attempt on the senator and the killing of his personal and security aides, including a passerby.

HURIWA stated that an unspecified number of police operatives were reportedly killed on Sunday at Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, when suspected assailants opened fire on the convoy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
HURIWA said there is no logic to explain that such an audacious attack can happen in such a place and it took ages for any sort of security intervention to arrive at the scene of the crime.

ALSO, two South-east based groups, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) and Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET) have condemned the attack and the killing of Ubah’s three aides and three security officers.
While COSEYL, in a statement signed by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, described the acts as “wicked, barbaric and villainous on a great son of Igbo nation”, ASCONET, in a statement by its chairman, Prince Chris Azor, condemned the attack, advocating for the strengthening and overhauling of the security architecture in the state and the country, at large and fishing out the perpetrators and make them face the law.

Similarly, the Coalition of South-east Professionals Network in Nigeria and Diaspora (CSEPNND) described the development as “yet another sponsored, barbaric, and senseless attack”.

In a statement by its National President, Prof. Madumere Chika, and National Secretary, Mazi Anayo Uchemba, the coalition claimed that the assassination attempt, just like many other attacks across the South-east geo-political zone, is perpetrated by enemies of Ndigbo, whose ultimate mission is to give a dog a bad name and hang it.

Besides, the CSEPNND maintained that the provocative action signposted the collapse of the nation’s security architecture which, in turn, has rubbed off on the capacity of security operatives to tackle crime and criminality frontally.
