A Nigerian lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, has written to King Charles III of the United Kingdom (UK) and pleaded for a prerogative of mercy for the ex-Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, who were jailed by the UK court on Friday for organ harvesting.
The lawyer made the plea in Abuja on Saturday in a letter he addressed to the newly crowned British monarch.

SaharaReporters on Friday reported that Ekweremadu, his wife and their accomplice, Doctor Obinna Obeta were sentenced to nine years, four years and 10 years in prison respectively by an Old Bailey Court for organ trafficking.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajulo in his letter said, “Your Majesty, though invigorated by your coronation, I witnessed the same with mixed emotions.

“Ekweremadu and his wife have been convicted and sentenced accordingly and I plead that you graciously and mercifully invoke the Royal Prerogative of Mercy in favour of the couple.”
The lawyer described the chronicle of the Nigerian former federal lawmaker and his wife as a sad one that left a bitter taste in the mouth.
Ajulo, who said Ekweremadu and his wife’s action was a “desperate” move by parents in their quest to save the life of their daughter Sonia, noted that the lady in question (Sonia) was in dire need of a kidney transplant but unfortunately, her parents and their doctor went about the mission in the most unsavoury of ways.

According to him, Ekweremadu may have chosen to not publicly advertise for a kidney donor to avoid swindlers who could take undue advantage of his daughter’s ailment.
